1 lot = 100,000 EUR

Indicative default. Type the current price from your platform.

Result

Profit / loss

Estimates for a USD account. They exclude spread, commission and swap, and use the price you entered, not a live quote.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses. Maximum leverage depends on the instrument, account type and your jurisdiction.

How it works

How profit and loss are calculated

The price move is the close price minus the open price for a buy, or the open minus the close for a sell. Multiplied by the contract size and lots, it gives the result in the quote currency.

For instruments quoted in USD the result is already in dollars. For USDJPY the yen amount is divided by the close price. Dividing the price move by the pip size gives the move in pips.

Move = (close − open) for buy
Move = (open − close) for sell
P/L (quote) = move × contract size × lots
P/L (USD) = P/L (quote) × quote→USD rate
Pips = move ÷ pip size

Worked example

Example: sell 1 lot of EURUSD

  1. You sell 1 lot of EURUSD at 1.0850 and close at 1.0800.
  2. For a sell, move = 1.0850 − 1.0800 = 0.0050, which is 50 pips.
  3. P/L = 0.0050 × 100,000 × 1 = +$500 before spread, commission and swap.
  4. Had the price risen to 1.0900 instead, the same trade would have lost $500.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate forex profit?

Multiply the price difference between open and close by the contract size and the number of lots, then convert to your account currency. For a sell trade the sign is reversed: you profit when the price falls.

What is the difference between buy and sell?

A buy (long) position gains when the price rises and loses when it falls. A sell (short) position gains when the price falls and loses when it rises.

Does the result include trading costs?

No. The calculator shows the gross result of the price move. Your actual result also depends on the spread, any commission on your account type and swap for positions held overnight.

Which price should I use for open and close?

Buy trades open at the ask price and close at the bid; sell trades open at the bid and close at the ask. Use the prices shown in your platform for the most realistic estimate.

Can I use this to plan a stop loss and take profit?

Yes. Enter your stop-loss level as the close price to see the potential loss, then your take-profit level to see the potential gain, before you place the trade.
